About Black Ski Clubs

Yes, BLACKS DO SKI & SNOWBOARD!!! Now that we got that fact out the way, it's time to celebrate and acknowledge that the sport that has traditionally been exclusive to the affluent majority, has now been welcomed and enjoyed by all races.

The rise in Black incomes and crumbling stereotypes has a direct correlation to the increase of African Americans on the ski slopes. Today, Black skiers and snowboarders get greeted with stares and double-takes as many didn't get the memo that the ski resorts are no longer exclusive. So it's time for everyone get used to seeing Blacks snow bunnies in the lodges drinking apple martinis, and Black riders getting big air on the black diamond runs.

Blacks started hitting the slopes in small groups starting in the 1970's. Today, national events will bring hundreds to thousands to the slopes. The National Brotherhood of Skiers has a lot to do with this. Their national Summit event is their biggest fund raiser and attarcts thousands to slopes for a week every year. The NBS regional events attracts several hundred to their respective events.

This trend will continue, since families are raising their kids to not just ski, but also race. This will allow them to excel on the slopes and hopefully, with sponsorship help from the NBS, become the first Black to win an Olympic ski medal.

The ski resorts are recognizing that their customers are changing. In response, they have several programs and discounts designed to attract more African American skiers and snowboards to their slopes. Once they arrive, the warm reception and expert lessons they provide will ensure Blacks will continue to return to improve their skills and have more adventurous fun.

According to David Becher, a senior researcher for Colorado marketing research firm RRC, the number of African-American skiers still remains low, at 2 percent. Four percent are Asian, 3 percent are Latino, and 1 percent are Native American.[1]

As the interests of African Americans continue to become more diverse, we should continue to see an increase in the numbers of Black Skiers and Black Snowboarders. Seeing a Black on the Olympic medal stand will probably be the biggest boost. Will it ever happen? Hmmm, Will we ever have a Black president? "Yes We Can"
